Dear Sentinel Supporter,
Thank you for visiting our website; it is an honor to have the opportunity to communicate with you on behalf of the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation, Gulf Coast. Our definition of a Sentinel is a severely injured man or woman serving in the US Armed Forces, returning from combat with injuries sustained post 9/11. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide the Sentinel with a four-year scholarship and mentoring program to support their successful return to civilian life in our community. This scholarship will provide rent-free or mortgage free housing, career placement with training/higher education, a vehicle adapted for special needs, and financial as well as personal mentorship. Scholarship recipients called Sentinels, receive the gift of time to readjust to civilian life and their new physical and emotional challenges.
In the last three years, our committee has raised over $100,000 and our first scholarship was awarded in 2010 to Cpl. Donald Daughenbaugh, USMC. While serving in Iraq, Donny was on patrol and was shot in the face at point blank range. The bullet was inoperable and is still lodged in his skull today, very close to the spinal nerves. The suffering that Donny endures has not stopped him from moving forward; a loving husband, a young father, an American, a proud Marine and the first Sentinel for the state of Texas. Donny is currently fulfilling his lifelong dream by attending San Jacinto Community College, with the intention of transferring to University of Houston, Clear Lake.
All donated funds to the Sentinels of Freedom Gulf Coast Foundation remain in our community and all administrative and board positions are volunteer. Every dollar donated has had an exponential effect. The Sentinels recently donated $40,000 to a local builder and because of this joint effort, the Daughenbaugh family received a new home in June 2010, valued at $250,000. Now that is what we call an extremely successful investment of donated funds!
The Sentinels of Freedom schedule of events and pertinent information have been posted on this website for your review. We would consider it an honor to have your participation and support for 2012. Don’t miss this opportunity to say “thank you for your service” to these young men and women. Thank you and God bless you for your help. Sleep well tonight with the knowledge that these great members of our American Armed Forces maintain a constant vigilance guarding and protecting us as this nation’s Sentinels of Freedom.
Sincerely,
Gail Payne
